Bradley Whitford, Rob Lowe and Nick Offerman in the 1999 episode of The West Wing, The Crackpots and These Women, and in tonight’s Parks and Recreation episode, Live Ammo.
There are plenty of West Wing references in “Live Ammo,” which leads me to believe that the writers talk about that show constantly. I mean, they must, right? That show is so, so good that anything vaguely political that happens on any TV show is has to be held up to the high standards of the Bartlet administration. But “Live Ammo” is more than just a chance to geek out. Sure, Leslie and Councilman Pillner (who looks an awful lot like Bartlet with his big glasses and weathered Whitford face) walk-and-talk within moments of the episode beginning. And sure, Pillner has a napkin framed on his desk that reads, “Pillner For Pawnee,” written in what looks exactly like Leo McGarry’s handwriting. There are more than just fleeting references in the episode: “Live Ammo” is about The Greater Good, particularly as it pertains to politics, and how doing the right thing involves making a whole lot of people fuckin’ pissed. That’s basically every episode of The West Wing right there.

I’ve got an airplane hanger out that filled with 500 strangers looking to me for direction. I’ve got a candidate who doesn’t trust any of them. And frankly neither do I. And if you don’t think I miss you every day.

30 Days of The West Wing: Day 3
Favourite episode: 20 Hours in AmericaI think this episode showcases everything truly great about this show - from the highly amusing Josh, Donna and Toby segments in Part 1, to the heartbreaking, cadent rhetoric with which the speech of Part 2 is delivered. Every character has a moment in this one - from CJ and Charlie’s compelling subplot, to the realisation that Debbie Fiderer may be the only person who can winningly succeed Mrs Landingham’s chair, the Nancy-Fitzwallace-Leo scenes, all the way across the board to the lost trio and the President’s campaign. That’s not to mention Sam’s contribution, which also spans from amusing to emotional. This, to me, is also Christopher Misiano’s finest hour - with stunning directional choices in the way the speech is shot, the composition of Josh, Toby and Donna stuck in the broken down car, the beautiful line of the trio watching the television and then conclusively, the three of them walking back to the White House with the final line, “We will do what is hard”.
Something spectacular happens when everyone: Sorkin, Misiano and every member of the cast, is at the top of their game. That is this episode. It perfectly explores the story-telling device of utilising contrast and balance. The extent of the playful hilarity offered effectively counterposes the subtle, quiet emotional pull of the latter scenes, making both aspects all the more powerful. There were simply way too many moments to do justice to this episode in a photoset. I would simply say that even if you don’t watch this show full-time, this episode is a stand-alone masterpiece.
everything i’ve ever tried to say.

as requested by anon“The streets of heaven are too crowded with angels tonight. They’re our students and our teachers and our parents and our friends. The streets of heaven are too crowded with angels, but every time we think we have measured our capacity to meet a challenge, we look up and are reminded that that capacity may well be limitless. This is a time for American heroes. We will do what is hard. We will achieve what is great. This is a time for American heroes and we reach for the stars. God bless their memory, God bless you and God bless the United States of America.“
the best.
